Hiring: Director of Music Ministries


Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Claremont, California, is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are a family-sized, multi-generational congregation, with approximately 150 worshippers each Sunday. Good Shepherd Lutheran currently has two Sunday services, a contemporary service at 8:30 a.m. and a traditional liturgicalservice at 10:45 a.m., as well as a monthly Taize service.

We are currently looking for a Director of Music Ministries to enhance our worship experience.

Title: Director of Music Ministries

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Under the direction of the Pastor, plan and coordinate the music programs, providing leadership and resources to other musical staff in the programs.
  2. Under the direction of the Pastor, select and provide organ/piano music for weekly traditional Sunday services, plus church seasonal services such as Christmas Eve and Day, Thanksgiving, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Lenten services, and monthly Taize service.
  3. Schedule all choirs and ensembles participating in worship.
  4. Hold weekly rehearsal, and direct the Chancel, Chimes Choirs, and seasonal children’s choir at the traditional liturgical service with at least one choral performance per year.
  5. Provide leadership to all musicians participating in the program; recruit and encourage participation from all age groups within the congregation.
  6. Make available new resources and ideas to program participants.
  7. Attend regular staff meetings and monthly Music and Worship Committee meetings. Attend other congregational committee meetings as necessary.
  8. Determine and submit the annual budget requirements for the music program, including music, and administrate the expenditures of the approved budget.
  9. Maintain the music library and supervise the maintenance of all instruments (organ, pianos, keyboard and chimes). Prepare a maintenance report detailing the current condition of the organ and pianos, and specify necessary maintenance.
  10. Participate with the church staff, Pastor and other leaders in facilitating congregational goals, assuming responsibility for tasks as mutually agreed upon with the Pastor.
  11. Maintain professional competency by practicing, performing, attending continuing education opportunities, teaching workshops or seminars, and reading professional journals.
  12. Contract and schedule concerts throughout the year for community groups.
  13. Bachelor’s degree in music, church music, organ, or other related degree.
  14. Familiarity with basic Lutheran theology and liturgical practice.
  15. Broad knowledge of church music styles (classical, contemporary, folk, and gospel) and the role of music in Lutheran worship, matching music with the themes of the church year.
  16. Demonstrated skill and competency on a Johanus 4-manual Rembrandt organ. Must be able to lead hymns, liturgy, and anthem accompaniments.
  17. Experience and competency directing choirs of all ages and chimes choir.
  18. Ability to sing and play with accurate pitch and rhythm.
  19. Ability to work well with others and participate collegially with staff members, Pastor, and congregational leaders.
